Justin Warrick Nielson, 44, of Denhams Beach, pleaded guilty to charges of being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and intentionally damaging property in Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday, July 5.
According to police facts, Nielson drove into the Bridge Plaza carpark sometime after 5.30pm on June 23 and saw his victim's car about three or four spaces away.
Nielson's son left the vehicle and entered the Plaza, and the victims also left their car and entered the Plaza after him.
The facts state Nielson then left his car and rummaged around the boot before removing a long metal pole.
He then walked to the entrance of the Plaza, but turned around and followed the four victims back to their car.
CCTV captured Nielson raising the metal pole in one hand while walking towards the victims and kicking the driver's side door when they entered their vehicle.
During an interview with police, he denied ever holding a metal pole, and blamed the CCTV footage on a "glimmer" in the camera.
In court, Nielson's lawyer told Magistrate Doug Dick the incident was "an unusual one".
"My client thought there was going to be a fight between his son and the victims, so he concedes he picked up a tyre iron from the boot and came back to the car," he said.
"He went in to check on his son, came back out, and there was a confrontation.
"He tells me it was 'extremely foolish', and he had a paranoid attack and thought his son would be harmed.
"He's very embarrassed about being here today."
His lawyer asked for no conviction to be recorded, but Magistrate Dick quashed the idea.
"My job is determining what the community thinks is appropriate (as a punishment)," he said.
"This is a shopping centre carpark, we don't need this type of behaviour.
"A conditional release order doesn't get the message across."
Nielson was convicted and fined $2000. He was also ordered to provide his fingerprints to the police.
