The recommendations will put pressure on the government to ratchet up its response to the February 1 coup.

But a consensus report tabled by Liberal MP Dave Sharma has accused junta leaders of playing a role in the overthrow of democracy and violent repression of subsequent protests.

Military security forces have killed hundreds of civilians in the wake of the coup and jailed many thousand more including Australian Sean Turnell, who was an economic adviser to deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Mr Sharma said the military coup had reversed significant gains made over the past decade under civilian, democratic rule in Myanmar.

He wants the Australian government to support regional diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis and consider the implications for development assistance to Myanmar.
