Broulee Surfers Surf Lifesaving Club's Darren Drewsen is riding on the back of his State Titles success last month, after winning the flags event and placing third in the beach sprint.

He hopes to outdo his previous bronze and silver medal efforts at this year's Aussie Titles on the Sunshine Coast, which runs from April 16-24.

"I have never won gold," he said.

"I definitely want to make the finals in the sprint and do as well as I can in the flags."

He will compete in the 45-50 year-old male beach events.

"It's competitive but friendly at that age; it's a big field," he said.

"Most over 40s competitors were involved when they were younger and are coming back into the surf club with their kids."

For Darren, family is a big part of the surf club culture. He has two kids, Luke and Erin, who were competitive also.

Erin will compete at the Aussie Titles in the under 14s flag event.

"I am a little nervous, but excited too," she said.

"This is my first Aussies and it will be a good experience."
