Tuross Head bowls
Peter Macdonald is the 2020 Minor Singles Champion at Tuross Head Bowling Club. He was playing in his third final of this event and he had also been a losing semi-finalist on two other occasions. He played Brian Currie, who is only in his second season of competitive bowling, with the difference in experience proving to be a telling factor.
The early ends were tightly contested but Macdonald was able to gain an 12 - three advantage before Currie fought back to 12 - eight.
The next end proved critical as Macdonald hit back with the maximum four shots and regained his lead of eight shots at 16 - eight. Currie seemed to lose his confidence at this stage as Macdonald won the next six ends to move to 26 - nine and won 31 - nine.
Macdonald was in great touch on the day and continually put pressure on Currie. While Currie seemed to hold his nerve he just could not get the break he needed to change the momentum of the game.
Macdonald is a worthy champion. Currie deserves congratulations for making his way to the final and he will benefit from the experience.
The fourth semi-finalist in the Fours Championship has also been decided following a close match between Des Jackson, Alan McLeod, Ray Downey and John Monks and Brian Currie, Ben Hewison, John Fahey and Doug Williams.
Williams' side had the better of the early ends of a low scoring game. They led nine - four after nine ends. By the 14th end Monks had drawn level at 11 all. Williams hit back to be in a strong position at 17 - 12 after 18 ends.
The next end swung the match. Monks' quartet were able to pick up six shots and move to the lead at 18 - 17.
They consolidated on the next end and were able to defend on the last end to grab the win 19 - 18.
The key to the win was the play of John Monks who played several key bowls to either grab the shot or to reduce the number of shots his opponents could score.
The semi-finals and finals of the Fours Championship is next weekend.
