Myril's house was filled with flowers and balloons and cards from family and friends and Moruya locals who popped in to offer their congratulations and good wishes.
Our paper last featured a special article on Myril when she received the honour of an Order of Australia in September 2016.
Myril received the honour for 'Services to the community of the Sapphire Coast' at Government House in Canberra.
Throughout Myril's life, she has been dedicated to her local community and sporting associations such as Surf Life Saving, Swimming, Women's Bowling and Tennis, and community organisations such as RSL, Legacy and Meals on Wheels.
Myril's passion for Surf Life Savings started at age 19 when she joined the Mollymook SLSC Ladies March Past team.
To qualify you had to pass a resuscitation test! The team was coached by Arthur Bunt, who Myril married in December 1954 at Five Dock.
In November 2000 Myril received the Australian Sports Medal (certificate signed by Prime Minister John Howard and awarded by the Governor-General) for services to Surf Life Saving.
The medal was established as a commemorative award within the Australian Honours system and was created to recognise contributions for services to sport. Myril has received Life Memberships in five organisations:-
- First Life member of Moruya Amateur swimming Club
- Life member of Moruya District Meals on Wheels
- Life member Moruya Sub branch RSL Women's Auxiliary
- Life member Moruya Surf Life Saving Association
- Life member Far South Coast Branch Surf Life Saving Australia
Myril and Arthur were married at Five Dock on 11th December 1954.
Myril lived at Milton, and Arthur was posted there as a Policeman. Myril and Arthur moved to Moruya in 1956.
Their five children inherited their sporting genes, particularly in swimming and Surf Life Saving.
Myril has seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren whom love to visit!
In 2004, Myril and Arthur celebrated 50 years of marriage. In 2014, Arthur sadly passed away in Batemans Bay at the age of 94.
Arthur was a life member of the Moruya swimming Club, Moruya SLSC and Far South Coast Branch SLSA. Arthur received the British Empire Medal (B.E.M) in 1970 on behalf of the Queen and the Governor General.
Since Arthur's passing, Myril has remained active. Until last year, she was the coordinator for Moruya, Bodalla and Tuross Legacy for 35 years.
These days, Myril enjoys gardening, knitting and crocheting at home in Moruya, with her back deck over-looking the tranquil Moruya River.
Myril is constantly visited by locals, friends and family on their travels, who pop in for a cuppa. Myril is much-loved around the community and we all wish her a hearty congratulations on her 90-year milestone!
