It seems the weather, as inconvenient as it may be, might actually help keep the virus contained this weekend.

We are bracing for another dump of rain as a low pressure system tracks across the country, also bringing with it some pretty cold temperatures.

The silver lining in this cloud will be the likely deterring of people from making the weekend trip to the coast.

We know the virus travels with people and tracks along transport corridors. We've seen that with the Victorian outbreak. Genomic sequencing showed the outbreak at The Crossroads hotel in Casula had originated in Victoria.

The cluster that appeared in Batemans Bay around the Soldiers Club was suspected to have had its origins in western Sydney.

So to hold the line against the virus and to prevent a catastrophic repeat of the Victorian nightmare, it is important we do everything we can to keep it at bay, including limiting unnecessary travel outside the district in which we live.

This isn't mandatory but it is commonsense, just as wearing masks where social distancing is not possible is a sensible decision.

If we all make good decisions that limit the spread of the virus, there's a good chance we'll avoid a return to the type of hard lockdown we saw in March. More importantly, we'll avoid the spike in deaths Victoria is now enduring.

The loss of a person in their 30s should sound alarm bells for younger people, who might be under the misapprehension that they are somehow immune to the consequences of COVID infection.

It might seem tough but if they can put off the planned social gathering, they should. As Victoria is learning the hard way, the less social contact, the less movement of people, the better the chances of suppressing the virus.

If we act now, deliberately limiting our movement and social contact, we will save ourselves a lot of future pain.

Luckily, the awful weather heading our way this weekend will make those tough choices easier to make.
