The 2019-2020 summer Batemans Bay basketball season was cut short by the bushfire crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic delayed their winter comp.
The season would usually run from the start of June for 13 weeks, with finals after that.
Now Batemans Bay Basketball Association president David Blewitt is glad to announce their winter slam will go ahead and begin Monday, July 20.
State regulations have allowed players to return to the courts from July 1, however Mr Blewitt said it would be unfair to start the basketball season at the beginning of the holidays, when families were on vacation.
Therefore officials made the decision to commence at the start of the school term 3.
Both juniors and senior competitions would begin, and run for 10 weeks.
Mr Blewitt said this way, all teams could play the same number of games: "the aim is to get as many people as we can playing basketball as soon as possible".
The final week would see the top two teams play off for the title, with the remaining teams playing for minor placings.
The regional representative team, Batemans Bay Breakers, would be involved in the country challenge starting in September.
Mr Blewitt said rep training would return as soon as the council reopened their facilities.
He said the association had registered with NSW, and were declared "COVID safe". There would be biosecurity officers and social distancing rules at stadiums. State rules could change, so it was important to stay updated.
Mr Blewitt encouraged anyone to put their hand up to play basketball, from U10s to open men and women.
In particular, more girls were needed to join the competition. Girls' training is on Thursday afternoons from 4.30pm.
He hoped "Aussie Hoops", a program teaching the basic skills of basketball to primary school students, would return in term 3.
The summer season would then be on track to start September-October 2020.
