On Sunday, December 29, rowers, sweeps, paddlers and a huge crowd of supporters met at Corrigans Beach, Batemans Bay.
Conditions were calm, yet smoke haze lingered.
Committee member Gab Smith said the spirit of competitors was lively, as they prepared to complete the first 31km to Moruya.
"The road to get here was very long and harrowing for some, taking into account the bushfire surrounding us on multiple fronts," Ms Smith said.
"Assessments on the conditions are done each day after consulting with various agencies.
"It's a different Bass this year considering the air quality and road closures.
"Everyone is buoyant and will take into account any adjustments made as necessary."
The seven-leg race covers almost 200km of coastline from Batemans Bay to Eden.
