On Wednesday, November 27, crews undertook 12 kilometres of backburning along Western Distributor Road.
"Crews did a remarkable job to keep it to the east of the road," incident controller Mark Williams said.
The remote area and difficult terrain have limited crews to creating containment lines along roads.
On Thursday, crews will continue to backburn in the south-east corner and southern border of the fire near Old Mines Road and Old School Road, Currowan.
Four strike teams with five tankers on board were on the ground and one helicopter is assisting. Another helicopter is expected to assist this afternoon, Mr Williams said.
The RFS will be tapping into Forestry, National Parks and Wildlife Service and Fire and Rescue resources as a section 44 was declared. Local resources are currently on-scene, but neighbouring districts will be involved later today.
A Section 44 declaration means the fire is of a "significant nature" and the commissioner has appointed an incident controller - Mr Williams.
The fire, which begun on Tuesday afternoon, has burned about 5,500 hectares. Mr Williams said the fire was expected to increase in size given the containment strategies put in place.
Conditions have eased on the fireground since Wednesday with easterly winds are forecast for Thursday. Crews are attempting to get ahead of south to south-westerly winds expected to arrive on Saturday and northwesterly winds expected for Sunday.
Mr Williams asked residents to be vigilant, monitor the Fires Near Me app and listen to broadcasts to stay informed.
9.46am: A section 44 has been declared for Rural Fire Service crews after a Currowan blaze continues to burn out of control on Thursday, November 28.
The fire is burning more than 4500 hectares, Shoalhaven RFS said.
Far South Coast RFS spokesman John Cullen said a section 44 was declared.
He said there was a lot of smoke coming into the valley from fires at Currowan and near the Victorian border and RFS was receiving a lot of Triple 0 calls.
He asked members of the public should call if they see a column of smoke or a fire and to give a reasonable location with landmarks of where it is.
He urged property owners to be vigilant as lightning strikes could appear as fire days after the event.
Firefighters undertook backburning to strengthen containment lines overnight, and fire activity eased this morning Fires Near Me said.
