Far South Coast RFS spokesman Marty Webster said staff at a Forestry fire tower reported smoke columns in the area at about 4.30pm, Tuesday, November 12.
A Fires Near Me alert was in place.
An RFS helicopter, Mogo RFS crew and National Parks and Wildlife crew were sent to investigate.
"With a day like yesterday, we weren't going to take any chances," Mr Webster said.
He said at this stage there was no evidence of a fire in the area, and it could have been dust lifted by wind or a vehicle.
He said weather was being "kinder" on Wednesday, November 13, compared to Tuesday.
A state-wide fire ban was still in place across the state until midnight, Wednesday, November 13.
"That means no fires out in the open anywhere in NSW. Very dangerous conditions are forecast for today," an RFS spokesperson said.
