Winning the toss, Bomaderry made first use of an excellent pitch. Fiery young quick, Justin Rumble, made life uncomfortable for the visitors and had the breakthrough in his third over - a skied top edge, magnificently caught at deep fine leg by Dan Smith.
Rumble, who sits second on the district wicket-taking tally, claimed match figures of 4-29. He was ably supported by all bowlers used, each of whom bowled tight lines and full lengths to make scoring difficult. Mercurial veteran Pat Griffin again proved his worth, snaring 3-23 from his allotted eight overs of impeccable control. Other wicket takers chipping in were Dan Smith (1-13), Sam Lee (1-25) and Stephen Knight (1-13). Hancock (0-11) again bowled with guile and precision and was unlucky not to be among the wicket-takers.
Bomaderry crumbled from a strong position at 3-70 to be dismissed in the 38th over for 118, with only four batsmen posting double figures. Despite a few chances being grassed, the general standard of fielding saw marked improvement.
Batemans Bay looked skittish at the start of the modest chase, losing openers Sean Griffin, caught at slip for one and Dan Smith, needlessly run out for seven. The elegant young bat, Lachlan Malcolm, who has been in scintillating recent form, slightly mis-timed a signature off drive, holing out for seven, to leave the home side teetering at 3-18 in the fifth over.
Last-start match-winners Ryan Hall (16) and Darcy Knight (37) again looked to consolidate, adding 25 for the fourth wicket, before Hall was well caught attempting to collar the bowling.
Knight fell LBW looking to whip a straight one off his pads. Knight put on a steadying 65-run partnership with Sam Lee (34 n.o.) for the fifth wicket.
It was then left to Sam Lee and Zac Henstock (8 not out) to steer the side safely home, passing the target in the 27th over. Lee looked increasingly assured in his time at the crease, stroking the ball to all parts of the ground at a run a ball, in a performance that bodes well for the future.
Next week sees Batemans Bay 2 nd Grade host Nowra Ex-Servicemen. The locals will be looking to post another win, despite the likelihood of being slightly under-strength, owing to injury and non-availability.
3rd grade
Batemans Bay got off to a brilliant start in a game against Shoalhaven-Ex-servicemen at Lyrebird Oval. Harry Shannon and James Dickinson compiled a magnificent 147 runs in their opening partnership. Harry scored 65 while James went on to tally 95, just missing out on his first senior century.
With a total of 6/222 to chase, Shoalhaven were all out in the 35 th over for 190. Good ground fielding and some super catches from James Dickinson and Chad Salmon assisted the bowlers greatly. Mark Templeman with four wickets and James Dickinson with two ensured victory for Batemans Bay.
4th grade
On the picturesque Milton showground oval, Batemans Bay won the contest against Ulladulla Ex-Servos. Ulladulla batted first and scored 82 runs on the lush outfield. Paul Pinches (17) and Geoff Howarth (16) were the best of the Ulladulla batsmen. But there was spirited resistance towards the end of their innings. Good catching, fielding, and bowling kept Batemans Bay in the game. Paul Cullen 3/9, Bailey King 3/16 (two catches), and Tom King 2/6 bowled with great control and persistence.
Batemans Bay reached the total in the 21 st over. Two important partnerships guided Batemans bay to victory. The first between Tyler Frawley and Luke Gallen yielded 42 while the father-son combination of Rob and Tyler Frawley added 24 runs to bring victory to Batemans Bay.
