A police spokesman said emergency services were called to a fire in the engine bay of a boat on the Clyde River.
A Marine Rescue NSW spokesperson said two adults and two children were aboard a five-metre centre console boat .
They were able to put out the fire themselves using the safety equipment on board.
The Marine Rescue spokesman said Batemans Bay crews were deployed and towed the vessel.
Nobody was injured.
Another private vessel was standing by with a fire extinguisher.
The spokesman said the reports "at this stage are it was an engine fire, however that has not yet been determined".
He said it was Marine Rescue's job to get the people on board and the boat to safety.
Marine Rescue Regional Operation Manger Glenn Sullivan said the incident highlighted the importance of having the correct first aid and fire safety equipment on board in good, serviceable order "in case of emergencies like these".
