The Mid South Coast WIRES branch said it had received an increasing number of reports about native animals and birds being entangled and injured by fishing lures and line.

The large Eastern Grey Kangaroo was hooked in the mouth by a fishing lure at Pretty Beach Cabins, Pretty Beach, near Bawley Point.

"The rescue required the assistance of Park Rangers from Shoalhaven Council who sedated the roo in order for the hook to be carefully removed," the spokesperson said.

WIRES said a volunteer, Tony de la Fosse, removed the hook.

"The kangaroo was hooked in the mouth by a soft plastic lure," Mr de la Fosse said.

"Luckily it didn't suffer any major injuries and is again enjoying life at Pretty Beach."

WIRES said it was unfortunate the Eurobodalla branch received dozens of calls concerning coastal birds, sea turtles and other marine creatures who were injured as a result of becoming entangled in fishing line or tackle.

"Many of these have to be humanely euthanased as a result, as their injuries are too severe," the spokesperson said.

"It is very important that recreational fishermen properly dispose of their line and lures," Mr de la Fosse said.

"Never throw unwanted line or lures overboard or drop them into waterways.

"A hook caught in a beak, or mouth, can make it impossible for our wildlife to eat resulting in death by starvation."
