What is Vietnam Veterans Day?
Originally known as Long Tan Day, Vietnam Veterans Day commemorates the men of D Company 6RAR, who fought the battle of Long Tan on August 18, 1966.
More than 100 Australian and New Zealand soldiers battled more than 2000 Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the village of Long Tan.
In the ensuing battle, 18 Australians were killed and 24 were wounded.
The day has been known as Vietnam Veterans Day since 1987 following a successful Welcome Home Parade.
