Catalina
Club Catalina's Ladies Captain, Oroya Mitchell, is on a roll in 2019, with her recent stream of wins - scratch winner on the Par 3 Championship on April 7; winner of the women's 36-hole at the Batemans Bay Open April 27-28; and winner of the Seniors' Open June 9-10.
The First National Par 3 Club Championship, in its first official year, had 76 players participating in the event right across Catalina's best. Of the 36 lady players, Oroya took out the women's scratch winner prize with 74. The event was a shot gun start with all players returning to the club to indulge in after game aperitifs and canapes with the presentation of awards and prizes.
Then there was the Batemans Bay Open which has been a long running event at the club. This year the event attracted 487 players from 43 different localities throughout NSW and Victoria as far afield as Warnambool, who played the course over the three-day period.
The course condition and running of the event was applauded by all the players. The tremendous effort by the Course Superintendent, his dedicated staff and the assistance of volunteers was a key to the success of the event.
There was strong competition over the three days in both the women's and men's fields. Oroya and many other Club Catalina golfers such as John Neeson, Zinyo Garcia, Kayne Carmichael and James Dickson put up strong performances for their home town. Oroya won on the Saturday and was runner-up for Sunday's event (losing by 1 shot). In a close game among the women, Oroya came first overall in the women's with 69, winning on a countback.
The Seniors Open, in its second year, had 74 players (29 of them were visitors across 21 different clubs in NSW). Visitors came from as far afield as Sydney suburban clubs, Wollongong, Wagga Wagga, Orange and many of the South Coast clubs.
It was good to see some repeat visitors again, one such visitor was Ken Brewer from Lynwood GC who again took out the overall Champion prize with a scratch of 151. In his thank you speech he gave praise to the running of the event and the magnificent condition of the course.
Oroya took out the 36-hole ladies title with a scratch of 166. That was seven-shots ahead of her nearest opponent over the two days. Oroya said: "The second day was cold and windy but regardless I enjoyed the company of my playing partners from Wagga Wagga and Tura Beach." When asked how she would spend her winnings she said, "I am going to buy my nephew a brand new golf buggy."
