Twelve Batemans Bay bushwalkers took a trip to Nerrigundah to hike forest trails and investigate the historical sites. Alluvial gold was found in the area in the 1860's and a gold rush ensued. The 8km walk did not disappoint the group as there are plenty of relics of the era to see, including the impressive stamper battery and tram line rails.

Walkers donned head torches and followed their leader, Barry Keeley, into a mine tunnel where they were delighted to discover a small colony of micro bats. After emerging from that mine, several other shafts close by, were investigated.
The return walk along forest roads presented an opportunity for Ian Barnes to share his extensive knowledge of tree species identification with walkers. A sleepy python was seen sunning itself not far from the trail.
To complete the history lesson the group visited the memorial to Miles O'Grady, a policeman who lost his life to the Clark Gang bushrangers during their robbery spree in April 1886, as well as the Chinese pig roast oven. For more information go to www.baybushwalkers.org.au.
