A public mural, sculptures, a larger playground area, a large paved area for markets and pop-up stalls and extra seating are included in the plans.

The design coincides with the building of a new Batemans Bay bridge, that began in early 2019 and is expected to be completed in early 2023.

Acting Regional Director for Southern Region Joanne Parrott said the design would provide better access to the river.

"There will be opportunities for events, improved landscaping and artistic ways to pay tribute to the existing bridge and local history - which is sculptural work and a public mural," she said.

"The improved T-wharf on the southern foreshore will feature two floating pontoons - one on either side - and it will deliver better access between the river and town, and a major increase in the mooring length available."

Project Manager Kylie Curran said local stories were part of the artistic plan.

Bega MP Andrew Constance said rather than become a target for graffiti, a wall on the northern side redesigned as a mural would give the community an opportunity to be involved in the project.

"We've seen this happen elsewhere around the state. Rather than being a target of graffiti, it becomes a sense of community ownership around that type of public art," he said.

"We've got some fantastic artists already in the region who have made contributions - in NSW and the ACT. We want to engage the community in terms of that design and come up with something unreal."
