Phil discussed how climate change (warming) has increased the variety of plants that can now be grown in the Eurobodalla. Some may still require a special position/aspect to be successful.
Phil also advocates careful soil preparation with as much organic material as possible introduced into the soil to help reduce CO2 and give plants the best chance of satisfactory growth. Mulching with pea straw or lucerne will reduce the amount of watering required, while the mulches improve the soil structure as they 'break down'.
He also advised members to dig a hole twice the size of the pot and 100mm deeper than the pot when replanting into the garden. Refilling the hole with quality potting mix/soil and watering in with "Seasol" type additives increases the microbes in the soil to give the plant the best chance to overcome 'moving stress'.
Phil then answered questions from members before displaying an attractive variety of plants that can now be grown with reasonable success in the Shire.
The display tables were very good this meeting and afternoon tea was its usual treat.
The club will meet again on March 28, in the Anglican Church Hall, at 2pm, with interested guests made welcome.
