Locked in a three-way tussle for the last of the remaining semi-final places, the home side had much to lose.
A spilled chance at slip off Darcy Knight’s opening over was quickly atoned when Josh Lee crashed through the defences of T. Huard (3).
Lee (1-5) bowled with great accuracy, restricting the North Nowra top order to barely a run an over, a run-rate maintained for close on forty overs.
This was to be a battle of wills, played out upon a docile, batting-friendly deck.
Veteran bat Brett Mark (24) provided stout resistance for hour upon hour, finally succumbing to the probing off-spin of Lachlan Paterson (1-39).
Elsewhere, captain Paul Davidson raised the bat for a patient, mature innings of 56, a knock that threatened to take the game away from the home side.
Batemans Bay made their task decidedly more difficult than it ought to have been, spilling no fewer than five relatively simple chances.
On a more positive note, the wicket-keeping display from young Ryan Hall was very accomplished.
Hall took two catches and effected a clever stumping.
Batemans Bay eventually prevailed, winning on first innings by 34 runs, as North Nowra lost their final three wickets for only three runs.
The Bay had been forced to bowl 75 overs to eventually dismiss North Nowra for 161.
Brad Hancock (4-25) was cruelly denied a rare hat-trick, his in-swinger missing the top of off stump by the merest margin.
Darcy Knight (3-30) again challenged all batsmen and could have collected more wickets.
The home team’s other wicket-taker was Praveen Varghese (1-38).
Seeking valuable bonus points, Batemans Bay had eight overs at the conclusion of the day’s play to score as quickly as possible.
In a chaotic spree, the home side lost four wickets for 53, thereby earning the solitary bonus point.
Luke Condon’s (18) lusty blows provided entertainment, supported by cameos from Zac Henstock (16) and Anthony Mortimer (11).
A crucial penultimate round shapes up as an intriguing contest this week as Batemans Bay host the in-form Ex-Servicemen’s outfit.
Needing to win both their remaining games, Batemans Bay will be looking for a much improved fielding display.
Outright victory over Nowra for 3rd grade
Competition leading Batemans Bay 3rd Grade side had a strong outright victory over 2nd placed Nowra to send a clear message to other sides leading into the finals.
Batemans Bay resumed at 4 for 76 and lost 3 quick wickets before overhauling Nowra’s first innings total of 94.
However a century stand between Sean Griffin and Tom Purcell advanced the score from an uncomfortable 7 for 85 to 190 runs before Purcell fell for 66.
The younger Griffin compiled a further 52 runs in partnerships with Mark Templeman and Peter Nelson before the innings was declared closed at the tea break with the total 9 for 242 and Griffin remaining 86 not out.
Batemans Bay bowlers then went searching for the outright victory, the ball being shared around, not letting any batsmen settle.
Nine bowlers were used, and six of them took wickets.
Nowra were all out for 92 runs, to complete the victory by an innings and 56 runs.
First innings points over North Nowra-Cambewarra for 4th grade
Batemans Bay were unable to convert their strong overnight position into an outright victory, due to some stout second innings defensive batting by North Nowra.
Batemans Bay resumed batting at 4 for 77 having already dismissed North Nowra cheaply for a total of 25 runs.
Jed Salmon moved on to a well-compiled 28 to assist his father Chad (52) to take the score on to a total of 148 all out.
With hopes of an outright victory, Batemans Bay bowlers toiled hard for 59 overs to try and dismiss North Nowra cheaply for a second time, but were thwarted by resolute batting.
Ten bowlers were used by the Bay to no avail as North Nowra survived to be 6 for 114 at stumps.
U/12s too strong for Ulladulla
Batemans Bay Under 12 side proved far too strong for Ulladulla in their match at West Ulladulla Sports Complex.
Batemans Bay won the toss and sent Ulladulla in to bat, and soon had the home side in trouble.
Only one batsman reached double figures as Ulladulla were bowled out for 31 runs.
Joshua Franklin was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 2 runs off 2 overs.
Wickets were also taken by Will McAteer, Jackson Riley and Flynn Dunn.
They were well backed up with good fielding with two good catches taken and two run-outs.
Cooper Frawley (15 n.o) and Ricky Holmes (8 n.o.) opened the batting for Batemans Bay and were clinical in their batting, passing the Ulladulla total in the sixth over, to win by 10 wickets.
U/11s: Berry too strong
Batemans Bay U/11s hosted Berry Shoalhaven Heads Whites at Hanging Rock and were outclassed in a strong performance by the visitors.
Berry won the toss and batted first. They compiled a large total of 165 runs against the Bay bowlers, who never gave up.
Best for Berry were Will Fletcher and Max Marshall, both scoring 21, and Charlie Britton, 18.
Batemans Bay started their innings with a mammoth task in front of them.
All batsmen were able to get runs, but the accurate Berry bowling tied them down. They batted out their full 20 overs but the steady fall of wickets eventually weighed against them and they were all out for 83.
This was a good performance against a very skilful opposition and there were some good individual performances among the Bay team.
All senior teams and the Under 12s will play at home next weekend. The Under 11s play at the Thompson Street Sports Complex, Sussex Inlet, at 8.30am.
