Come along and ask us any questions about your device. We don’t know all the answers, but we’ll do our best to help you. Meet some members and join us for a cuppa!
If you know a bit about your devices, why not join us and give a hand to help others? EuroSCUG is a group of people who share computer skills in a supportive social atmosphere, helping each other make the best use of their computers, tablets and smart phones.
At the last meeting, popular local genealogist, Cora Num, returned to give a presentation entitled “Trove – One Search, a Wealth of Information”.
Cora demonstrated how to use the Trove website, a free service hosted by the National Library of Australia, to research information on a variety of subjects. A search collates and draws together material about the topic or person, and presents the results in zones.
She related some interesting stories she had found, such as that of the pig who rescued the passengers from the wreck of the SS Kameruka, shipwrecked south of Moruya in 1897.
Many interesting old photos of people, houses, roads and scenery of the local area can also be found on the website.
Another interesting story Cora related was about a prosthetic hand, developed by an Adelaide dentist, for Corporal Coles, who lost the fingers of his right hand, in 1842, when the gunpowder in his cannon exploded. He used the hand for 42 years until his death in 1886.
Researching genealogy is just one of the ways EuroSCUG members use their devices.
Others include email, online banking, editing photos, travel, and saving money. Come to our Open Day and ask us how! For more information visit our website at www.euroscug.org, or phone 0431 809 073.
Our history
In mid 2007 The Australian Senior Computer Clubs Association (ASCCA) with the assistance of the Eurobodalla Shire Council held an open meeting to gauge interest in the formation of a seniors computer group in the shire.
The response was overwhelming and a steering committee was formed which organised and managed the formation and incorporation of the Eurobodalla Seniors Computer Users Group, to be known as EuroSCUG.
EuroSCUG held its first public meeting in February 2008 at the St Johns Anglican Church Hall which was full to overflowing. Meetings were soon moved to the Moruya Golf Club in order to accommodate the growing numbers.
By December 2008 the group had over 100 members aged 55 to 80+ from a variety of backgrounds with a range of computing skills.
