‘The Bas’ is the region’s first purpose-built arts space and will serve as a platform for local and touring shows, incorporating a professional-standard 100 metre square exhibition space.
Following a tour of the facility recently, the centre’s main benefactor, Basil Sellers himself, said he was “thrilled” with the result.
Mr Sellers visited Moruya last week to check on progress at the worksite.
“I want to see it become something unique, because this region is unique,” Mr Sellers said.
“I am delighted in the direction that the team at council are steering this facility.”
Eurobodalla Shire Mayor Liz Innes said The Bas would meet the differing needs of the shire’s arts community.
“It will be a reactive space,” Cr Innes said.
“Yes, we’ll have the art shows but there’s potential for so much more. It will be perfect for floor talks, long-table dinner events, touring shows, and workshops. It could even lend itself to special events, like functions and boutique weddings.”
Cr Innes encouraged all to attend the grand opening on Friday, February 22.
“We’ll be announcing the winners of the Basil Sellers Art Prize, which is now in its eighth year. The major-prize winner takes home a tidy $20,000,” she said.
“That’s thanks to the ongoing generosity of Mr Sellers; and it’s so exciting we’ve had record entries for the prize with artists across NSW and the ACT.
“In response to the prize going state-wide this year, Council has introduced the Eurobodalla Prize – that’s $5,000 for a local artist – as well as supporting the $500 people’s choice award.”
Council’s arts coordinator Indi Carmichael said the Bas program had something for everyone.
“The exhibition centre is a major platform for home-grown talent, but plenty of visiting exhibitions and returning favourites too,” Ms Carmichael said.
“It’s a professional-standard space with sound-rated moveable walls, video-conferencing, and heaps of parking just outside.”
