A post on the shop’s Facebook page announced his death on Monday morning, prompting tributes and condolences from around the district.

“We are absolutely devastated and ask for understanding. Apologies for any inconvenience. Michelle and Georgia,” the post, which the shop would be closed until January 29.

A sign on the store read: “Please understand this is a devastating time for everyone. His love for all things literature and this local community was awe-inspiring.”

Mr Evans’ illness was announced in a separate post on January 18.

The bookstore owner and publisher was known for his infectious love of literature, which spanned many genres, from children’s books to the deep and esoteric. 

Mr Evans would happily share his passion with customers, many of whom have left tributes on the store’s Facebook page.

“I am so sorry to hear this. Garry was such a valuable, important part of our community. I am sure he has left a little piece of his passion for literature and story telling with many,” wrote Monica Mudge.

“So very very sad to here, always loved chatting with Gary about various books and snow skiing adventures,” posted Anneke Smits-Lette.

Mr Evans not only weathered the digital disruption that took a number of large book retailers out of business but thrived. 

In 2015 he told the Times there was a global return to the traditional paper book over its e-reader challengers.

In July last year, Mr Evans partnered with the University of the Sunshine Coast, to unearth new literary talent. 

The plan was that each year the university would shortlist six student-written books, manuscripts or proposals for consideration by Harbour Publishing House, which publishes a mix of children’s illustrated books and novels, young adult, teen and adult fiction, and non-fiction.
