The team of Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemnens’ Jones and Batemans Bay’s Hall started strongly, securing a first up win against ACT Southern Districts at Bunton Park.
After winning the toss, Greater Illawarra, coached by Shoalhaven’s Philip Wells, decided to bat first in the 50-over contest.
Opening the batting, Hall top scored for his side with 62, which included nine boundaries – as his side went on to post 206 from their 48.4 overs.
In reply, Greater Illawarra managed to restrict their opponents to 189 – with both Jones and Hall taking a catch each.
Unfortunately, Wells’ side couldn’t make it two tins on the trot against Central Northern at Urana Road Oval, going down 2/79 to 78 – despite Hall’s nine runs and Jones’ 0/13 from four overs.
The change of format, from 50-over to Twenty20, didn’t help Greater Illawarra’s success, as they lost their third game of the tournament to Newcastle at Birallee Park.
Batting first, Hall’s six runs helped Greater Illawarra post 7/125 from their overs before Newcastle reached the target (6/129) with three balls to spare.
Greater Illawarra then suffered their third straight loss North Coastal, losing 160 to 8/107 at Kelly Park.
With the ball, Jones claimed 1/13 while Hall was dismissed for just one with the bat.
Thankfully though, the team ended their campaign on a high, defeating hosts Riverina in a 50-over match at Lavington Sports Ground on the final day.
After being sent in, Greater Illawarra posted 9/208, with Jones and Hall scoring nine and four respectively.
In response, the hosts could only muster 146, from the 43.4 overs, thanks to Jones (0/24) tight bowling.
