The stewards were compelled to delay the second race of the twilight meeting for a short while, due to surrounding storm activity.
Robert and Luke Price took out the #visitshoalhaven class 1 maiden plate over 2200 metres with Bulwark ($4.60), ridden by Kathy O”Hara.
The four-year-old gelding settled well in second place for the majority of the long journey, before gaining the upper hand over his rivals at the 600 metre mark.
The first-time winner dug deep to stave off the late swoopers, to win by the smallest of margins over In Ya Skyrocket in second place and Horn, third.
O’Hara and Shaun Guymer each rode a winning double, O’Hara on the previously mentioned Bulwark and also on board the Jason Attard trained Kitty’s Own ($26), in the Culburra Kitchens and Bathrooms class 1 handicap over 1400 metres.
While Guymer steered Ahmad ($18), trained by Edward O’Rourke and Michael Freedman, and Accountant ($19), trained by Matthew Smith, to victory.
The next race meeting at Shoalhaven City Turf Club will be held on Monday, January 14.
