Jason David McGrath, 28, narrowly avoided jail time when he faced Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday after a weekend of offending.
On Sunday, McGrath was charged with two offences after witnesses saw him doing burnouts in a Batemans Bay resort carpark and contacted police.
Shortly later, he was caught on camera doing burnouts in the centre of the Old Princes Highway at the Orient Street intersection, leaving a trail of rubber stretching 80 metres.
This offending followed a string of charges the previous evening, including mid-range drink driving, driving while suspended and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
When interviewed, McGrath told police he was “getting ready for Summernats” and had to “get it out of his system” after watching “too many YouTube movies on burnouts”.
“I had a blew with my missus and I just took it out on my car,” McGrath told police.
“I was a f***ing idiot. I jeopardised the safety of others.”
In court on December 10, McGrath was lively and talkative when Magistrate Doug Dick handed him a 12-month Intensive Corrections Order, $4800 fine and a 12-month disqualification.
Defence solicitor Travis McGeachy told the court things had gone “from bad to worse” from McGrath.
“Things just went really wrong for this man and it started to affect others,” Mr McGeachy said.
“His partner kicked him out …. he’d been drinking heavily.
“His way of blowing off steam was to go out and do these big burnouts.”
Despite McGrath showing remorse at times during his police interview, officers said it was “shocking” to observe his reaction to footage captured of the burnouts.
“What police found most shocking was the accused drawing enjoyment and displaying how excited and proud he was when re-watching the video,” police said.
He was also convicted of two domestic violence-related offences.
