Played at Campbell Park, Greater Illawarra, featuring Ulladulla United’s Drew and Jay Ramsden, Berry-Shoalhaven Heads’ Alec Dobson and Bateman Bay’s Lachlan Malcolm, won the toss and elected to bat first.
The decision quickly turned sour, as both openers Willoughby Watson and Cooper Harrison were dismissed for ducks – leaving Greater Illawarra reeling at 2/3.
But determined batting from Oliver Needham (57) and Callum Milson (20) steadied the ship.
With the help of contributions by Lyndon Coward (18), Thomas Williams (18), Alec Dobson (15 not out) and Lachlan Malcolm, Greater Illawarra recovered to post the competitive total of 167 from 49 overs.
The chief destroyers for Newcastle were Selman Hassan (3/26) and Harry Dwyer (2/27).
In reply, Greater Illawarra needed early wickets but unfortunately it didn’t happen – with both Newcastle openers Joseph Gillard (84) and Cameron Claridge (27) leading from the front.
Despite Newcastle losing 4/11 to be 4/88 midway through their innings, 34 not out from Samuel Guy saw his team home (6/171) in the 47th over.
Skipper Lachlan Malcolm was Great Illawarra’s best with the ball, claiming 2/31, while Alec Dobson finished with 1/23.
