The women we invite to Kairos Outside for Women guest weekends are the mums, grandmas, girlfriends, sisters affected by someone in jail.
Their family may cut them off because they support the guy inside. Kairos Outside for Men helps those affected by a female inside.
The November 17 fundraiser held in Tuross Head for the next Kairos weekend was very successful and a lot of fun. About 80 people danced and laughed all night. We are very happy with the funds raised for the weekend scheduled for October 2019, at The Pines, Tuross Head.
Often the person inside is the breadwinner; the mortgage or rent money disappears. Wives support husbands with the best legal representation they can find, often losing the family home. A mother may lose contact with an angry daughter who believes her drug-selling brother deserves jail and should not be supported. Grandmas are shattered by the actions of adored grandchildren. Their guilt is palpable: “What else should I have done?" "I should have worked harder." "Why didn't I see the signs?" Those convicted made their own decisions and by the end of a Kairos weekend, these ladies have accepted that and are released from shame and loss of self respect.
Inmates become part of the Kairos family - sometimes it’s the first time they have felt part of any family. Families know they are not alone. Women can confidentially share without judgement their isolation, criticism, shame and financial struggles. We discuss, talk, sing and eat well, giving hope and courage. We see smiles and new confidence. We hold monthly coffee groups from Bulli to Eden.
This is not a glamorous ministry, but can give a whole family a more positive outlook. Email kowsouthcoast@kairos.org.au

Bridge concerns
Whilst the announcement by the NSW Government of a concrete bridge to replace the iconic steel bridge across the Clyde River at Batemans Bay has met with broad approval, there are many community members who decry the present lack of detailed information.
These are residents who live and often operate over, under, around or near the existing bridge and are concerned about the unseen and ill-defined effects that the new bridge may create.
The next forum is at the Soldiers Club on Saturday, December 1, at 2pm.
