A group of nine Batemans Bay bushwalkers embarked on a 16-kilometre hike, led by Brian Mercer, through Murramarang’s forest. After walking down Mt Agony Road for a short distance, walkers turned off and passed through “The Secret Door” a very overgrown and unused section of an early logging track. This track continued on till it joined the aptly named Spotted Gum Road which walkers followed for some distance.

The leaf-littered trail meanders through the tall spotted gum forest for several kilometres, affording views of green gullies with varied, understorey vegetation. Several lyrebird calls were heard and some walkers were fortunate to glimpse one as it scurried away.
After intersecting with Mt Agony Road again, walkers continued on another logging road that led to an untracked and more challenging section of the walk. This took walkers down to an area of rocky outcrops adorned with moss and orchid plants, no longer in flower. Needing a rest the group enjoyed some time in this tranquil location.
Refreshed, the walkers continued down the slope into a densely vegetated gully, across a dry creek bed and climbed the other side to intersect with the Discovery Trail and followed this to Durras Lake Walking Trail, eventually emerging at their original starting point.
Brian’s “Secret Door” had been an enjoyable walking experience. For more information go to www.baybushwalkers.org.au
