More than 80 competitors did just that at Moruya for the NSW and ACT State Skydiving Championships – many of them more than once.
Skydive Oz hosted their sixth NSW and ACT State Skydiving Championships last weekend, with over 80 participants competing in 5 freefall events.
The clear blue skies were filled with parachutes both days, with over 700 individual skydives being made.
Australian champions Steve Smith and Jimmy Cooper coached teams to assist with their performance.
Mr Cooper was very impressed with the skill level of the top teams.
“We’ve already started training for the Nationals,” he said of his team ‘Focus’.
The team won bronze at the recent World Parachuting Championships.
“We’ll definitely have to train hard to stay ahead of these upcoming teams,” Mr Cooper said.
Local Moruya teams excelled in the competition.
Team ‘Block Party’ won the four-way Vertical Formation Skydiving (VFS) event, and team ‘Facon ‘Til You’re Bacon’ came second in four-way Formation Skydiving, A division.
ACT teams stood out in the two-way VFS event.
Team ‘The Heavenly Squids’ came second, and ‘Lovebirds’ came third.
It (National Championships) will be the biggest skydiving event Moruya has ever seen.

Goulburn teams did well in several events – team ‘Froth Wobbles’ won two-way VFS, ‘Two Good’ took bronze in two-way Formation Skydiving and bronze in four-way Formation skydiving, A division.
Sydney teams also took home lots of medals – gold for ‘Caliente’ and silver for ‘Higher BOCE’ in Four-way Formation Skydiving, AAA division, gold for ‘Tunnel2Sky’ in two-way Formation Skydiving, and gold for ‘All Four Down’ in four-way Formation Skydiving, A division.
Top teams will now start training for the National Championships, held for the first time in Moruya next March.
Skydive Oz owner Paul Smith said he is excited to host the prestigious competition.
“We’ve been expanding the facility for the past five years and are honoured to win the bid for the competition,” he said.
“We expect over 200 skydivers to attend from all over the country – it will be the biggest skydiving event Moruya has ever seen.”
