Thanks to the generosity of Canberra’s Rod Lee, swimmers with a disability at Broulee will receive the royal treatment after the donation of a new beach wheelchair.

Mr Lee, who is a quadriplegic, presented his generous donation to Broulee Surfers Surf Life Saving Club on Sunday, as a token of thanks for the club’s support with his beach outings in the past.

Tracey Lee said the wheelchair would make a swim in the ocean more accessible for everyone.

“If you’re in a wheelchair and want to swim, sometimes you have to rely on a group of family or friends,” Ms Lee said.

“With the wheelchair here at the surf club, it means anybody on duty can support a person who wants to feel the amazing freedom that the sea provides.

“In summer too it’s a nice opportunity to get from your wheelchair across the sand and into the water.

“This is the Rolls-Royce of wheelchairs for Rod to do that and for anybody else in the district who has a disability and wants to have a swim.”

Club president Alan Veness said the club would be good custodians of the new chair.

“We’ve already got two chairs but this one is much much better than anything else that we’ve got,” Mr Veness said.

“This will be fantastic, not only for Rod when he comes down to visit, but a lot of other people.”
