The Wilson-Mitchell family has been through some tough times since daughter Addison was diagnosed with cancer as a toddler two years ago.
“Addi”, now aged four, is in remission – and her family would love the community to get behind Rally for Recovery, in Tomakin, which raises funds for the oncology unit at Randwick Children’s Hospital.
Her parents Kristen and James hope to raise awareness of childhood cancer.
“We found out about the existence of the Rally for Recovery when out daughter was in hospital,” Mrs Wilson-Mitchell said.
“One of the oncologists, Professor Tracey, asked us where we were from. It was then that she told us about the Rally for Recovery in Tomakin.
“Professor Tracey then took us for a walk around the ward and pointed out all the equipment they would not have had, if it wasn’t for the Rally.”
Mr Mitchell decided to join in.
“It is like a volunteer garage sale,” he said.
“We accept all saleable goods at the shed on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, between 9am and noon, our opening hours.
“We’ve had stuff that’s come in the morning that has been sold by lunchtime.”
Addi has started pre-school, has finally caught up on all her immunisations and is free of cancer.
She finished treatment about 22 months ago, but her immune system remains vulnerable. She had another stint in hospital recently after a cold turned into pneumonia.
“We were thankful it was pneumonia, as horrible as that might sound, (and that) it was nothing worse,” the family said.
Truda and John Ward started Rally about 14 years ago and it has raised about $1.75 million.
President Ken Sloan said would love your time or goods.
“If you have an hour or two to spare and would consider giving us a hand, give us a call,” he said.
“We can always do with help with pick-ups/deliveries or just for an hour setting up or at the end of the day.”
