“It’s not in the bank yet, we’ve still got a step to go, but this is more than promising,” Cr Innes said.
Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis announced the funding on Friday, October 19, under the Australian Government’s Regional Growth Fund.
It comes on top of $26 million announced for the project by Bega MP Andrew in March this year.
Mrs Sudmalis said she was proud to announce her government had assigned $25 million in funding to the centre, and had worked with Minister for Regional Development and the council to prove there was community support to deliver the centre.
Cr Innes thanked Mrs Sudmalis and said the funding announcement was a clear indication the government supported the project and the Eurobodalla community.
“We understand more than 300 applications were received, so we’re absolutely thrilled, relieved, and more determined than ever to get this centre built for our community.
“I’m certain the council’s strong and affordable business case that focuses on meeting the broadest community needs and our commitment to the project have impressed the federal government.
“They can see us charging ahead. We’ve appointed architects and they’re meeting with our local user groups next week so their needs can be considered in the design process. Things are moving.
“Special congratulations to all the wonderful community groups that have been involved, particularly to Perfex and the Batemans Bay Indoor Aquatic Centre committee.”
“We’ve backed ourselves and our community and this result is just fantastic. I’ll say it again, we’ve never been closer to achieving the modern community facility our residents deserve.”
A council spokesperson said the community could be swimming Batemans Bay’s new indoor aquatic centre or enjoying a show in its theatre in less than three years.
