Earning a reputation and a devoted following for their passionate and thrilling performances, the Quartet bring their unique sound and breathtaking intensity to the classics of the string quartet canon, making audiences fall in love with these works all over again.
Orava was founded in 2007 by brothers Daniel Kowalik (violin) and Karol Kowalik (cello), Thomas Chawner (viola), and joined in 2011 by David Dalseno (violin), and is reagrded as one of the most exciting string quartets of its generation.
The first Australian string quartet invited to sign with Universal Music, Orava have performed throughout North America, the UAE, and Asia, and worked closely with the world-renowned Takács Quartet in the USA for two years, winning top prizes at the 2013 Asia Pacific Chamber Music Competition and performing at Sydney Opera House.
In addition to the University of Colorado, and Camerata, the quartet has held residencies at the Banff Arts Centre in Canada, the Bundanon Trust in Australia, and studied with members of the Jerusalem, Emerson, St Lawrence, Schoenberg, Julliard, Brentano and Goldner String Quartets.
Since returning to Australia, the Quartet has made an impressive and rapid rise to national attention, performing regularly at all the major classical and arts festivals.
Based in Brisbane, they are also Quartet-in-Residence with Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra.
The South Coast Music Society will conclude its 2018 programme of wonderful concerts with the Orava Quartet.
The Quartet will bring its vitality to the classics of the string quartet repertoire, in Czech Fantasy, with Haydn’s ‘Lobkowitz’ quartet, dedicated to the Czech Duke of Roudnice, and compatriot composer, and Schulhoff’s five witty pieces for string quartet.
In addition, in its finale to mark the centenary of Debussy’s passing, Orava Quartet will present his string quartet in G minor.
