Name, age and breed: Dusty, about 4 years old, Border Collie.
Owner and suburb: Kate from Moruya.
What attracted you to this pet? The first moment, her sweet face captured me. Then, as I got to know her as her foster carer, I saw she had a sweet nature to match. I've always loved Border Collies but never owned one, knowing how much energy they have, especially as puppies. But, as Dusty is older and more settled, I knew that she and I were a perfect match.
How did you make the decision to adopt a rescue animal? I recently started fostering for the RSPCA and Dusty was my first foster dog. I didn't originally intend to adopt any dogs, but Dusty didn't give me any choice after we'd fallen so totally in love.
What is the best thing about your new friend and companion? She is devoted and loving and a great joy to have around. She's funny and endearing and she gets me exercising more as well. The quiet moments when we sit together are my favourites.
Why would you encourage others to consider a rescue pet from the RSPCA? I've now fostered two dogs and they have both brought such rewarding experiences with them. They bring challenges with them that require attention and training, but once they have realised they are safe and surrounded with love, it's been incredible to witness the changes in their behaviour and personalities. The process of getting to know a rescued dog and building trust brings enormous joy. Watching them change from an anxious ball of fear and insecurity into a happy and relaxed dog makes you feel special.
