“It has been a very challenging few days on the beach, and unfortunately these tragic incidents are a reminder of the power of the ocean,” Mr Pearce said.
His warning follows the death of a 37-year-old man who got into difficult while snorkelling at Kioloa on Saturday, while another man died after a boating accident near Kurnell, on Monday.
“We want everyone to enjoy their time at the beach safely and it’s crucial that people make the effort to swim at a patrolled location and between those red and yellow flags.”
He said beach-goers could easily improve safety by following some general safety tips.
- Always swim between the red and yellow patrol flags, and check the BeachSafe website or app to find the nearest patrolled beach;
- Read the safety signs for information about the beach or ask a lifesaver or lifeguard for safety information;
- Always swim with someone else and look out for each other;
- ALWAYS supervise children around the water;
- Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
- Know your limitations in strong swell conditions;
- If you need help in the water, stay calm and attract attention by raising one arm;
- In an emergency, dial Triple Zero Police;
- Wear a safety jacket when fishing, particularly off rocky headlands;
- Be sun safe – slip on some protective clothing, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat, slide on a pair of sunglasses, seek some shade, and sip on lots of water to stay hydrated; and
- Arm yourself with information – read weather forecasts and tide changes before hitting the beach.
