Volunteer Sandy Collins says unseasonably warm weather is triggering breeding and birthing season early.
A pair of ring-tail possum joeys have come into care with their mother’s fate unknown as they were found alone, hungry and scared.
Baby kangaroos and wallabies have been coming in droves as mothers venture closer to the roads in order to find green grass.
August also marks the beginning of echidna breeding season – males are looking for females, and are more likely to be on the road.
Adult birds and older animals are also being affected by lack of food, which is made especially harsh with the lack of rain. Some animals are malnourished, and unable to forage for themselves.
WIRES encourages motorist that hit an animal, if it is safe to do so, to please check if the animal is deceased, and if there are young in the pouch. Joeys can remain uninjured and alive in a pouch for days.
If you find a weak animal, please call the WIRES hotline on 1300 094 737.
