Speaking at the Tuesday, August 14, Eurobodalla Shire Council meeting, the Broulee Moruya Giants spokesman said the club had identified Gundary Oval as the best location, and was happy to provide some funding and elbow grease if the council provided goodwill.

“We are not asking the council to build the facility, just to be open to the possibility,” Mr Williams said.

“We are very willing to put in the work.”

In February this year, the state government announced it would provide $185,000 to boost a $300,000 commitment from the council to redevelop facilities at the oval.

Responding to suggestions the club share facilities with other groups, Mr Williams said the options were impractical.

“There were rumours circulating we might want to use the (Batemans Bay) Seahawks facility,” he said.

“We hadn’t moved to do that formally, but they came back to us very strongly with an aggressive response about another club using their facility.

“The only one suitable is Kyla Park. Most of our membership is from Broulee, not Tuross (Head).

“The club has considered (using a school oval), although it has not been formally put to us as an option.

“I don’t believe it would be appropriate. I’m sure we would all like senior footballers to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, but I don’t think the environment would suit a high school.”

Mr Williams cited concerns about tenure if a school administration changed.

He said NSW AFL supported the club’s position, and the club had plenty of willing workers.

“We have a range of professionals, including project managers, builders, electricians and plumbers,” he said.

Councillors passed the Gundary Oval Masterplan, noting the decision would not restrict the AFL club’s ambitions.
