A Plastic Ocean brings to light the consequences of our global disposable lifestyle.

It follows an international team of adventurers, researchers, and ocean ambassadors on their mission around the globe to uncover the truth about what is truly lurking beneath the surface of our seemingly pristine oceans.

The event comes after two well received screenings Narooma and Moruya.

With the recent launches of the Moruya BYO Bag campaign and We Care Eurobodalla, and the end of Plastic Free July, Council’s Natural Resource Supervisor Courtney Fink Downes said it was now Batemans Bay’s turn.

More than eight million tonnes of plastic is dumped into the world's oceans every year and while the film is confronting, Ms Fink Downes said there was good news.

“Local environmental groups are working to make a real difference and moviegoers will also have the opportunity to learn how they too can be part of the solution,” she said.

“We’ll do a short introduction about our various environmental programs under way, including We Care Eurobodalla and the Marine Debris Working Group.

“It’s also a good opportunity for families to confront these issues and discuss them together at home and how things can be done differently.

“Simple things like taking your own reusable shopping bags, opting for refills where possible and refusing single-use plastics like straws, takeaway cups and utensils can make a big difference.

“The number of consumers who value businesses that make environmentally conscious choices is growing every year.”

The film runs for 100 minutes and attendees are welcome to stay and chat afterwards with local people working and volunteering in the environmental field.

A Plastic Ocean will be shown at Batemans Bay Soldiers Club on Beach Road, Batemans Bay, on Friday, August 24.
