So says Lerae Davison, director of Bay Theatre Players’ next production, Guys and Dolls.

Those audience members who recall the original 1955 movie, with Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Stubby Kaye, among many others, will remember the impossibly large stripes and check patterns and wide lapels they all wore – suits that are never seen on the streets of today.

And this is what Lerae needs. So if anyone has one (or many!), and is prepared to donate it or loan it for the production, please let Lerae (0417 290 764) know.

And, the odd fedora hat would also be very welcome!

Lerae and her cast and production team are now in the theatre, having taken possession of the Playhouse after Talking Heads, BTP’s mid-year production, closed at the end of July.

They have moved on from sharing the Uniting Church Hall with the squash players – with whom they very happily coexisted – and can now make full use of the Playhouse facilities.

The set is being built, choreography is being perfected, songs are being learnt and rehearsed and the show is starting to gather pace.

Guys and Dolls will be on stage from October 27 to December 2.

The show is based on the Broadway Stories of author, Damon Runyan, which perfectly capture the variety of characters who inhabit the fast-paced, hand-to-mouth, rough and tumble New York City of the show.

Meantime, come along to the Playhouse tonight (August 15) and join in a reading of Debra Oswald’s Dags.

The lead character, Gillian, is  a ‘dag’ – a nerd, a misfit, totally uncool.

Play reading co-ordinator, Tay Mugridge says, “throughout this play, commissioned by the Canberra Youth Theatre, Gillian takes us on a funny, excruciating journey through the world of adolescent anguish and awkwardness - trying to cope with her bright gung-ho sister, who has a bouncy, positive mental attitude; her gossipy girlfriends; her addiction to chocolate; and her desperate quest to be beautiful and popular.

“Gillian feels pushed to the edge, but, in a surprise ending, she triumphs!”
