After a seven-year break, he and two friends have entered a car in the 4400-kilometre adventure from Bonnyrigg to Braitling in the NT – and, fittingly, for these stars of generosity, the theme is “80s rock stars”. Their 1970 Toyota Crown is decked out in style, complete with rocking mascot Ernie.

“I did my first bash in 2007 – I was looking for something to do with my father, because I hadn’t spent a lot of time with him,” Mr O’Malley said.

He said the experience was unique – and the road trip was just a small part.

“People think we raise the money along the way, but it’s the opposite – to be able to participate is your reward for the fundraising,” Mr O’Malley said.

“The car entry is $8500, which you have a year to raise. When we go into communities, we’re not taking money out of them, we’re putting money into them.

“We’re very proud to say we’ve raised nearly $25,000 this year to support Variety.”
