There’s a good reason acclaimed Spanish guitarist Matthew Fagan has earned the nickname ‘Lord of the Strings’.
As one of Australia’s most engaging, versatile, fluent and imaginative musicians, Fagan has toured with some of the greatest talent to come out of the music industry.
This weekend, Fagan will return to the South Coast, with a performance in Batehaven on Sunday afternoon.
‘Gypsy Fire’ is a captivating live show, performed with passion and virtuosity, featuring the unmistakable talent of Fagan on the 10-string Spanish guitar.
The program features classical music from Vivaldi to Bach; Celtic music including O’Carolan’s Celtic harp and lute music arranged for guitar; Gypsy Swing Jazz a la Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt; European gypsy music and Classical Spanish and Flamenco music.
These sounds are featured on Fagan’s new vinyl album, El Vito, to be released later in the year, with pre-release copies available for purchase at the show.
Fagan has performed with the likes of Natalie Cole, The Original Buena Vista Social Club, Billy Connolly, Shirley Bassey and Michael Crawford, cementing his place as a tour de force not to be missed.
He continues to perform at major concert venues nationally and internationally and has toured more than 120 countries worldwide as a soloist and with an orchestra.
His music education includes study at the Victorian College of the Arts (Performance – Classical and improvisation), Monash University (Ethnomusicology, Composition Education) and a Masters PHD of Cultural Development at the University of Melbourne.
Fagan has studied and performed with masters John Williams, Paco Pena, Leo Kottke, Martin Taylor, Joe Pass and Tommy Emmanuel, amongst others.
As a performer, Fagan is entertaining, engaging and encourages audience participation in amusing situations. This includes his own ‘guitar challenge’, where he performs audience requests spontaneously in his show
Stories from his life of travel and entertaining are a special feature of his show.
This concert marks a rare opportunity to see Fagan’s vigour, passion and technicality live on the South Coast.
