At last weekend’s Bob Hinde Memorial, Bailey Sweeny - of Surf Beach - and Luke Ryan, of Mossy Point, won their respective classes in dominant fashion. The 15-year-olds have been racing karts for about three years.
The Bob Hinde is an annual event run by the Grenfell Kart Club. In its 11th year, the race meeting is one of the biggest club meets in the State and attracts racers from across NSW, including the South Coast, Wagga, Grenfell, Griffith, Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, Sydney, Lithgow and Canberra.
Three of the ten categories are for juniors aged 13-16. They are KA Light, KA 4 Heavy and the slightly faster KA 3. Luke had a tough time in the heats in rainy conditions but came good on the Sunday and won the KA 4 Light Final by more than six seconds.
Bailey was impressive all weekend with two wins and a second during the heats and went on to win the KA 3 Final by more than eight seconds.
The boys a very good mates (a friendship struck when they attended a racing development camp in 2016) and they’re very supportive of one another at race meets.
The next time the boys hit the track together will be in Griffith for Round 4 of the Southern Stars Zone Series in August.
Both are currently third in their respective categories but can go higher if things go well in Griffith and then in Round 5 in Canberra.
