Eurobodalla Shire Council says it will improve safety and traffic efficiency at a busy Batemans Bay intersection, following a $3 million grant from the Australian Government.

The council will begin preliminary work this week to improve road and pedestrian safety and reduce traffic congestion on Beach Road Batemans Bay, from the Princes Highway to Orient Street.
The project will include constructing an additional right-turn lane on Beach Road into the southern end of Orient Street, an additional left-turn lane onto the Princes Highway from Beach Road, and lengthening the two lanes in Perry Street that approach the Beach Road roundabout to allow for more vehicles.
New medians, pathways and refuges on Beach Road will help improve pedestrian safety in the area.
The works also provide a second lane out from the Mackay Park precinct onto the Princes Highway to facilitate future development of the site.
The upgrade implements safety outcomes identified in the council’s traffic studies and will ultimately result in reduced travel times for motorists, particularly during peak periods.
It is fully funded under the Australian Government’s Federal Election Commitment Program, which Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis advocated for.
The first stages of the work will involve removing trees along Beach Road to allow road widening and installation of a new water main, underground telecommunication and overhead power lines. Modifications to the car park near the Visitor Information Centre will follow. Additional trees will be replanted when the work is finished.
Motorists should expect minor delays during the initial phases of the project and additional information will be made available as construction proceeds. The construction timeframe on Beach Road itself is dependent on relocation of the telecommunication and overhead power lines.
