It was time the highway had money spent on it, Mrs Sudmalis told Sky News.
“We have been stuck with not having a lot of work done on our highway,” she said.
This follows South Coast MP Shelley Hancock’s announcement on Tuesday, June 12, that the NSW Government would commit more than $10 million to major safety upgrades of the highway.
Welcoming the announcement, Mrs Sudmalis said securing federal funding for the Princes Highway was a “priority”.
“As a matter of priority, the Princes Highway must be upgraded,” she said.
“I have discussed the importance of this highway with the Prime Minister, Treasurer and Infrastructure Ministers, as it is the only transport corridor along the South Coast of NSW.
“An upgraded highway will improve road safety and commute time, reduce driver fatigue, introduce local jobs during the construction phase and create better connectivity throughout Southern NSW.”
In May, Mrs Sudmalis wrote the Deputy Prime Minister and federal Infrastructure Minister Michael McCormack, asking that $1.28 billion in unallocated road funding be directed towards upgrading the Princes Highway between Nowra and Ulladulla.
“I would commend to you the urgent need for this funding, or a significant portion of it, to be allocated to the upgrade of the Princes Highway between Nowra and Ulladulla in the first instance,” Mrs Sudmalis wrote.
Mrs Sudmalis has been contacted for comment.
