That’s why Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue have backed Fairfax Media’s Fix It Now campaign to pressure the state and federal governments to upgrade the Princes Highway: “I think it’s a great initiative,” station commander Craig Mashman said.
“We have a high volume of high speed accidents, which impact emergency service workers. There is a big flow-on effect, especially when victims are family or friends.”
Mr Mashman said it wasn’t just emergency services who had to bear the burden – every-day heroes often assist: “Time is a huge factor in survival. Often we rely on members of the community to do initial treatment until we arrive, which can affect their mental health.”
“Anything that reduces accidents and improves safety is a win for the community.”
