Like the look of delight on Paul Barkley’s face as the Bay Post photographed his father, Harold, just before the Batemans Bay Anzac Day march on Wednesday. Paul is the Moruya RSL Sub-branch president’s permanent carer and got his Dad to the march, wheelchair or not.
Or the flag bearer who used the banner to shield an elderly man who had collapsed in the hot sun.
Or the group who jumped to jump-start an less-than-cooperative military jeep in time for the parade.
Or the veteran commando who used to proudly stride out in the lead at the Nelligen march, but who attended on Wednesday in his wheelchair. Wait for the golden closing moment in our video interview below.
Or, most poignantly, the picture dropped outside the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club. It shows seven excited Australian airmen during World War II – excited because it was mail day and they were a long way from home, training in Canada to fly bombing runs over Germany. Maybe, there was a letter from home in those chunky bags? At least two of those seven did not come home. We would love this photograph to be returned home to its owner. Hit reply if you can help.
