A Moruya public housing resident was shaken after a tree in his backyard smashed into the area his former neighbour’s children used to play in on Saturday, April 14.

“I was just sitting in my lounge room and heard a big crash,” Graham, who did not want his full name used, said.
“It had just snapped right off at the base. I’d been warning Housing for ages, that it was going to come down, but they didn’t seem to want to do anything about it.
“Kids played basketball right against this wall. Even if they were sitting on the balcony, it’s reached that far that it’s smashed one of the windows. If they were there, they’re dead. It’s as simple as that.”
Graham said, fortunately, the neighbours had moved out six weeks ago.
“I’ve been here about 10 years, and the first time I came here I got them (Housing) to have a look, because branches kept falling off. An arborist said it had rotted and needed to come down.” The tree was trimmed, but not removed.
The Department of Family and Community Services responded: “The Department has arranged for the removal of the fallen tree and repairs to the fence ... within the next few days. Contractors taped off the area and ensured it was safe last week, shortly after the tree was first reported. FACS has confirmed the resident is happy with this outcome.”
