Sunday saw the running of the half marathon, The Canberra Times Marathon and the 50km AURA Ultra Marathon Championships.

Narrabundah local Jordan Gusman was the first to cross the finish line for the second time in two days. Jordan backed up his win in yesterday’s five-kilometre race by winning the Half Marathon with a time of 01:06:33.

Second place went to Michael Roeger from Bruce with a time of 01:07:12, with Oxley local Joshua Torley coming in third in 01:07:26.

The first female to cross the finish line in the Half Marathon was Marnie Ponton from Glenbrook, NSW with a time of 01:18:10, followed by Sarah Klein from Moorooduc, Victoria who finished second in 01:21:35. Watson local Hannah Walmsley came in third with a finish time of 01:22:23.

Victoria was well represented in Sunday’s marathon, with the top three crossing the state border to take out podium places. Dion Finocchiaro from Brighton, Victoria came first for the men in with a time of 02:25:38. Second place went to Dane Verwey who finished with a time of 02:26:14 and Cockatoo local Craig Appleby came in third with a finishing time of 02:27:18.

The first female to cross the line was Kirsten Molloy from Port Macquarie, NSW who finished with a time of 03:00:57, followed by Leigha Wills from Winmalee, NSW in second place in 03:08:23. Taking the third spot was Jane Christinson from Newmarket, QLD with a time of 03:09:44.

Female winner Kirsten almost didn’t make it to the start line of the marathon after admitting to contemplating staying in bed, rather than facing the cold conditions experienced by all brave runners in Canberra this morning.

Vlad Shatrov from Kahibah, NSW came first in the 50km AURA Ultra Marathon Championship, with a time of 03:05:12. Second place went to Brendan Davies from NSW who finished with a time of 03:08:42, and Barry Keem from North Wollongong, NSW came in third with a time of 03:11:38.

Australian Olympic Hockey star, Anna Flanagan, swapped her hockey stick for running shoes

on Sunday as she took part in the Half Marathon event.

“I’m used to running a lot during a hockey match but had never challenged myself with running such a long distance,” she said. 

“My old hometown of Canberra provided a stunning backdrop to my first ever half marathon, and the support of the locals on the sidelines really helped me across the finish line.

“I can’t wait to back it up with The Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon in May!”
