For the people of Tathra, the winds brought destruction, fear and heartbreak, when the Reedy Swamp bushfire jumped the Bega River and claimed more than 60 homes.
As ever, Eurobodalla Shire firefighters jumped in their trucks and headed where they were needed.
This was the scene that awaited them.
Jacob Young took this photograph as Far South Coast Forestry firefighters fought to save what they could, while homes burned fiercely around them.
Whatever the agency – Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, Forestry or National Parks and Wildlife Service – crews put their own safety on the line for the public and we thank them.
We caught up with several in the aftermath and are proud to share their stories.
