Marine Rescue NSW has boosted services for summer, the busiest time of the year for recreational boating.
The 2017-2018 boating season got off to a hazardous start with MRNSW volunteers responding to more than 630 calls for assistance.
Of these 187 were life-threatening emergencies such as the rescue of two sailors whose yacht sank 12nm east of Point Perpendicular on December 16.
MRNSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos said units have stepped up routine patrols of their local waterways for the summer season.
“Volunteers at our 44 units have increased their presence on the water and the marine radio airwaves,” he said.
“Boaters can help us help them by always Logging On with their local unit.”
“Just let us know where you are going, how long you will be out, the number of people on board and your contact details.”
Mr Tannos urged boaters to try the free MarineRescue app for smart phones and tablets.
“It’s fast and easy to Log On with the app,” he said.
“For added safety it includes a pre-launch checklist and emergency procedure such as how to make a Mayday call,” he said.
“I want to wish boaters and our vigilant volunteers a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.”
